Notwithstanding the repeated and strong Constitutional guarantees of equality to women, the property rights of Indian women are far from gender-just even today. the challenges are many: social acceptance of women’s rights in property, womens’ own awareness of their rights, and their ability to claim and secure their inheritance or ownership, are some of them.

Several government schemes such as farm input subsidies and crop insurance are disbursed on the basis of land ownership or tenancy records. similarly, in urban areas, there are schemes for home improvements, that can only be accessed with formal property documents. it has been observed that disputed or unclear land titles inhibit supply of capital and credit for the owner.
